Istochnoye Uranium Deposit: Trial Operation of First Smart Site in Russia Successfully Completed
Innovative intellectual technology for managing the uranium deposit development was created by specialists of the Mining Division of ROSATOM State Atomic Energy Corporation in cooperation with scientists from the Seversk Technological Institute of the NRNU MEPhI. The implementation of the project, which is part of the unified digital strategy of ROSATOM State Atomic Energy Corporation and included in the package of the State Corporation digital products, allows to improve the productivity and economic efficiency of production. Trial operation in the Bauntovsky-Evenki District of the Republic of Buryatia began in December 2018 and has already proven the method’s effectiveness. The software complexes help the enterprise to reliably assess the mining and geological situation at developed deposit sites, simulate the development options, carry out accurate analysis of performed work, promptly make decisions in the analysis and forecast of deposit development, geological modeling and planning.
«The enterprise significantly optimized the ore body opening schemes, reducing the mining and site operation costs. The system is helping us to carry out the forecast and timely implementation of repair and restoration works, and therefore reduce the production complex maintenance costs. We bring the geological and geotechnological data processing to full automation, providing prompt access to any geotechnological information and now we will be able to calculate and maintain optimal modes of production block development,» says Andrey Gladyshev, Director General of Khiagda, JSC (subsidiary of ARMZ Uranium Holding Co./Mining Division of ROSATOM State Atomic Energy Corporation).
Due to transition to 3D modeling of production processes, the ore body opening schemes were significantly optimized. «The system makes the solution supply and pumping model optimal in terms of the technological cycle and, as a result, in terms of costs,» explains Roman Rudin, Discipline Lead at the IT Directorate of ARMZ Uranium Holding Co. For more accurate process details, flow sensors, level sensors, and self-regulating valve sensors are installed at each injection well. All information from the sensors is processed. The system calculates the optimal method for metal extraction and the most efficient chemical reagent supply scheme. The equipment has proven its reliability in difficult climatic conditions of permafrost.
Following the trial operation results, a decision was made to replicate the Smart Site technologies at other deposits of the Khiagda ore field. «ARMZ Uranium Holding Co. is one of the first in the world to introduce „smart“ technologies at all stages of technological processes from uranium exploration and mining to elimination of in-situ leaching mines. Our task is to improve production, increase its competitiveness using modern IT tools, and, most importantly, make it safe for the environment,» emphasized Vyacheslav Galaktionov, IT Director of ARMZ Uranium Holding Co.
