ARMZ Uranium Holding Co. employees take part in expedition for delivery of the Olympic flame to the North Pole
Three employees of ARMZ Uranium Holding Co. (JSC Atomredmetzoloto) took part in expedition that delivered the Olympic flame to the North Pole within the framework of a special project Sochi 2014.
On October 19, Yuriy Tokmachev, Deputy Director General – Director for Security of JSC “Atomredmetzoloto”; Ilya Korolev, Advisor to Director General of JSC “Atomredmetzoloto”; and Valentin Lozov, lead specialist of Investment Analysis Department of JSC “Atomredmetzoloto” reached the North Pole as members of State Corporation Rosatom’s team onboard the world's biggest nuclear icebreaker The 50 Years of Victory.
The aim of this expedition was to deliver the Olympic Flame to the North Pole and conduct the North Pole leg of the Olympic Torch Relay.
For the first time in the history, a journey to the planet's northernmost point was made under conditions of a polar night. The nuclear icebreaker, which departed from Murmansk on October 15, travelled approximately 1,395 nautical miles with an average speed of 15.3 miles per hour, having set a speed record in reaching the Northern Pole – 91 hours 12 minutes.
Representatives from eight member countries of the Arctic Council – Russia, USA, Canada, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland – participated in this leg of the Olympic Torch Relay.
During the expedition, ARMZ Uranium Holding Co. employees installed a pennant with the company’s logo on the North Pole. For the journey to the planet's most northern point, the Holding Company’s representatives also took with them a flag of ARMZ, bearing autographs of Artur Chilingarov, the Olympic expedition leader, Member of the Federation Council, and Valentin Davydyants, Captain of the nuclear icebreaker The 50 Years of Victory.
According to Yuriy Tokmachev, the Olympic flame delivery to the North Pole has become a one more confirmation of successful exploration of the Arctic and the Northern Sea Route by Russia and State Corporation Rosatom. “We proved that we can conduct work under conditions of Polar Regions. Today, Russia is the only country in the world which is capable of delivering anyone to the Northern Pole and back at any time,” highlighted Yuriy Tokmachev.
Ilya Korolev said that the expedition gave representatives of different organizations a chance to acquaint with each other and discuss practical steps for furthering cooperation. JSC “Atomredmetzoloto” is the only company within the structure of State Corporation Rosatom, which is implementing an extraction project behind the Polar Circle. We are very happy that a lot of our colleagues in the expedition have taken an interest in our activities and expressed their willingness to render assistance,” noted Ilya Korolev.
“This is a unique opportunity, coming once in a lifetime. Nothing can be compared to the impression produced by the Arctic. Many thanks to ARMZ and Rosatom for this wonderful journey! Together with my colleagues, we used these informal settings to tell the expedition participants about our company and projects being implemented, in particular, about the Arctic project Pavlovskoye,” said Valentin Lozov.
During the expedition to the North Pole, on behalf of ARMZ Uranium Holding Co., the Holding Company’s employees presented to Artur Chilingarov and Valentin Davydyants a souvenir – a statuette of a trolley loaded with uranium ore.
