Scheduled overhaul of equipment complete at the Sulfuric Acid Shop of the Hydrometallurgical Plant of JSC PIMCU
Overall, 75 pre-scheduled activities were accomplished. “In particular, the gas-duct compensators were bottlenecks, due to which excessive gas accumulation occurred on the shop floor. During the course of the repair works, we replaced them in five positions. Additionally, a new heat exchanger was installed in the production cycle,” Mikhail Chernyugov, shop floor process engineer, says.
A great deal of time was spent cleaning the equipment off contamination that had accumulated over the year, including ceramic sand, sulfates and foreign particles. For example, dirty sulfur collection vessels, bins, filters, a drying tower and etc. were cleaned.
During the repair operations, a process flow improvement suggestion was introduced, which enabled reduction of set-up time from 8 hours to just 20 minutes at one of the positions. More precisely, in the transfer from one blower to another it used to be necessary to make halts and to manually turn over four blank plugs during approximately 8 hours. Currently, special shut-off valves have been installed at the equipment.
“Together with the overhaul personnel from the Process Maintenance Department, we mounted a heat exchanger, compensators and other equipment. Machine operator Evgeny Safronov, shop floor manager Dmitry Kovyazin and power engineer Vyacheslav Skosyrsky arranged the works properly and effectively,” Nikolai Smirnov, manager of the Sulfuric Acid Shop, added. He also expressed appreciation to his colleagues for responsible and high-quality fulfilment of the equipment overhaul works and congratulated the whole team on their professional celebration – the Chemists' Day.
